Homes throughout our 14-county Southeast Texas service area are exposed to heavy rain, wind-driven water, humidity, and intense sun. A rusted, undersized, damaged, or poorly installed cover can allow water into the chimney chase, masonry, fireplace, attic, and surrounding home.

CHIMNEY CAP INSTALLATION AND REPLACEMENT

I install and replace chimney caps for masonry and manufactured fireplace systems. Options may include:

• Stainless-steel single-flue caps

• Custom full-coverage caps

• Hip-and-ridge full-coverage caps

• Animal screening and spark protection

• Powder-coated finishes when appropriate

• Properly sized caps that protect the crown and flue openings

A full-coverage cap can help shield the chimney crown, flues, and masonry from direct rain while also helping prevent birds, squirrels, raccoons, leaves, and other debris from entering the system.

CHASE COVER REPLACEMENT

A chase cover is the metal top installed over a framed chimney chase. When it rusts, sags, separates at the seams, or drains toward the flue opening, water can enter the chase and damage framing, insulation, venting, fireplace components, ceilings, and walls.

Replacement options may include galvanized steel or custom-fabricated stainless steel. Stainless steel offers stronger long-term corrosion resistance, and powder-coated finishes can provide additional protection and a finished appearance.

SIGNS YOU MAY NEED A NEW CAP OR CHASE COVER

• Rust stains running down the chimney chase or siding

• Water around the fireplace after rain

• A visibly rusted, loose, damaged, or missing cover

• Animal noises or nesting material

• Debris inside the fireplace or flue

• A chase cover that holds water instead of draining it

• Failed sealant around the storm collar or flue penetration

ASSESSMENT BEFORE REPLACEMENT

I inspect the accessible cap or chase-cover assembly, crown or chase top, storm collar, sealant, flashing interfaces, and nearby signs of water entry. Photos and findings are used to recommend the repair that addresses the source instead of covering the symptom. An exterior assessment is limited to accessible conditions and cannot verify the full flue, venting, firebox, smoke chamber, fireplace performance, or safe operation. A Level 2 fireplace and chimney inspection is recommended when you need the complete system evaluated before use, after a property transfer, following a chimney fire or severe weather event, or after changes to the system.

Exterior chimney assessments are $75, and that fee is credited toward approved repairs.
